The learning module investigated the characteristics of tectonic form and its construction processes The aim of the module is to explore are the potential experiential qualities of line, frame, plan, and surface in architecture. The module started with an image that was used to draw inspiration for tectonic structures that create modules that could be aggregated to different scales of architecture. Tectonic structure was explored through wooden sticks, wire, and paper. The final module involved a composition of line surface and frame.
First ideation of line models focused on tension of bows. The final aggregation resembles the circular cells of the original image. The surface model focused on how surface creates light. The tight foldings of the hyperbolic paraboloid creates depth.
The hybrid model exemplified the culmination of lessons learned from material studies. The design consisted of a frame of a hyperbolic paraboloid held together by a tensile string and a sheer wall. The individual members created a tensegrity that was malleable to form a variety of shapes.
